Design Project: Journey to Joy

journeytojoy

I recently finished a design project for a women’s ministry whose heart is to give hope and healing to hurting women through Jesus Christ. This is an amazing ministry. You can see the finished design on the JourneytoJoy.tv website. The domain name ends with .tv because there is a strong emphasis on videos that will be on the site to help and encourage women.

In addition to the website, I also designed the blog, Facebook, and Twitter pages.

It was a pleasure working with Esther, my client, and I wish them all the best. And, if you know a women in need of encouragement that could benefit from Journey to Joy’s ministry, please don’t hesitate to share the site. :-)

Losing the Baby Fat Update: This whole foods plant-based diet really works!

losingthebabyfat

Many of you know that we’ve made significant changes to our diet over the past year and a half. We started with buying more organic produce and other food items, along with switching our meat to grass fed beef & hormone-free chicken. We also started drinking organic milk and bought organic butter, yogurt, cheeses, etc… We bought eggs that came from free-range chickens and cut out aspartame and as much MSG as possible from our diet.

All of these changes made a significant improvement to our health. I’m convinced of this. We’ve lost weight collectively as a family, feel better, and don’t struggle constantly with stomach issues.

But as we’ve continued on this journey to healthy living and as we strive to prevent diseases such as diabetes, cancer, and heart disease from attacking our bodies, we’ve come to realize that we need to go a little bit further in our diet changes. Over the last few weeks we have worked to transition our diet to one that is mostly meat & dairy-free. Instead it’s a whole foods plant-based diet where we consume lots of vegetables, fruits, and whole grains including pastas, rice, and breads.

The result so far?

I have more energy than I’ve had in a long time, and I lost 2 lbs. last week! That means my current weight is 203 lbs.

Here’s what my overall progress looks like:

Beginning weight: 220 lbs.

Current Weight: 203 lbs.

Goal Weight: 170 lbs.

# of total pounds I want to lose in 2012: 50lbs.

# of pounds to go until I reach my goal: 33 lbs.

Total # of pounds lost to date: 17 lbs.

I’m also mentally keeping track of how much weight I’ve lost post-partum. Elisabeth is 6 months old now, and since I’ve come home from the hospital, I’ve lost 45.5 lbs.

Here’s what my post-partum results look like:

Weight on the day I came home from the hospital: 248.5 lbs.

Weight 6 months post-partum: 203 lbs.

Total weight loss post-partum: 45.5 lbs.

I know I said I’d share a picture this week, but Elisabeth came down with a fever last night, and we had a rough night. I was up at 2am with a sick baby, and she had to be nursed constantly, so….this basically means I haven’t combed my hair yet. ;-) I’ll post a picture as soon as I can. Elisabeth is still sick, and I’m hoping this fever doesn’t last long or worse….spread to our other 4 children.

DIY: Homemade Deodorant

deodorant

This year my goal is to try more DIY projects than I have in the past.

So far, I’ve made homemade hand soap, which was a huge success. Since we made our first batch in February, we’ve kept using it and continue to make more when we start to run low. We haven’t purchased a single bottle of store bought hand soap since we started using our DIY version, so I definitely consider the hand soap a success.

The homemade hand soap was February’s DIY project. I have yet to post on March’s project, but it was a flop for me. I’m planning on posting about that soon.

April’s project was homemade deodorant (recipe from Green Your Way), and this is what I’m going to talk about today. Our homemade deodorant was…..a smashing success!

The recipe is so simple, yet effective (and you know we need ‘effective’ when it comes to deodorants :-) ). I’ve been using the deodorant for about a month now, and I love it. I honestly can see this homemade recipe replacing our store bought deodorants.

Ruben and I have been using Tom’s of Maine deodorant and Crystal for our store bought versions, because both the Tom’s of Maine & Crystal deodorants are aluminum-free, which is important to us for health reasons. Aluminum in deodorant has been linked to cancer. Yikes.

And while we like both the Tom’s of Maine & Crystal deodorants….we are not truly 100% satisfied with either brand.

Enter the homemade version.

I love it.

Plus, it’s so easy to make, a 9yr. old can do it. Breanna, our 9yr. old daughter, made the deodorant for us while I supervised. She likes creating things in the kitchen, whether it’s a yummy new recipe or a DIY project, she’s our girl!

Plus, it counts for her school time. Bonus for her.

Here’s the recipe:

Homemade Deodorant

Ingredients

  • 1/4 cup baking soda
  • 1/4 cup corn starch
  • 5 tablespoons coconut oil

Cooking Directions

  1. Combine the baking soda and cornstarch in a bowl. Then mix in the coconut oil. Transfer deodorant to an airtight container.
  2. To use, put a little deodorant on finger tips and apply.

Here’s what the finished product looked like for us:

The deodorant in the container I ended up storing it in:

Have you tried any DIY projects lately?

Side note:

I haven’t any problems storing the deodorant in this Georgia heat….meaning that my deodorant, which is stored on our bathroom counter in our sometimes very HOT upstairs living area, hasn’t liquified (since it’s made out of coconut oil). But if you do find this is a problem for you, just try to store it in a cooler area.

Update: I created a How To Make Homemade Deodorant Video Tutorial for you as well.

10 Goals for the week!

10 Goals to Tackle This Week

Last week was fun and memorable. My mom was visiting, and she got to see the way we do life here in Georgia.

The sweetness and the craziness.

She witnessed it all…in raw form.

Oh, the stories she’ll tell! :-)

Really, I don’t have words to explain what it meant to have my mom here with us. We talked, went to the zoo, talked, visited the library, talked, and took the kids swimming.

Oh yeah, and we talked. A lot. I learned things about my mom I never knew.

I love that. I loved that I learned new things about my mom and our family that I can share with my kids.

My mom also got to witness first hand that changes we are making in our diet. She tasted delicious new recipes and the juices we’ve been making, too.

She watched documentaries and doctors talking about health and went home fully indoctrinated. I am sure my family at home in IL appreciates that. ;-)

Anyway, I had a fantastic week last week, and I even managed to tackle some of my goals…

Family/Mothering Goals:

1. Create a more structured homeschooling plan for Nathan & BreannaDone. I decided to try out a method where we use blocks of time for the different school areas they have to accomplish, much like what is mentioned in the Tell Your Time  ebook. So far so good.

2. Fix and write in baby books – I fixed the books after David had made a bit of a mess of them, but I didn’t write in them.

Personal Goals:

3. Juice everyday this week – We didn’t juice everyday, but we did okay. We are off to a good start this week, though. We all (including the kids) had juice today, and I have some ready to go in the fridge. We stumbled upon a delicious lemonade recipe that the kids like. It’s simply apples and lemon in the juicer. That’s it. It tastes great, and we pour it over ice.

4. Start reading the ebook, Tell Your Time  (affiliate link) by Amy Lynn Andrews - Done.

5. Work on speaking more gently to my children and giving them focused attention when they are talking to me – This is a work in progress…

Home Management Goals:

6. Unpack 1 box from the garageDone.

7. De-clutter kitchen counter – Half-way done. I have some paper clutter that still needs to be removed.

Business Goals:

8. Post one blog post each day and start my regular posting schedule! – Not done, but I’m hoping for a better week!

9. Return email/messages I’m behind onDone.

10. Create graphics for new topics I’ll be posting here on The Sensible Mom - Done! Finally!

And now for this week’s goals:

Family/Mothering Goals:

1. Read 10 books to the kids

2. Write in baby books

Personal Goals:

3. Juice everyday this week

4. Finish reading the ebook, Tell Your Time  (affiliate link) by Amy Lynn Andrews

5. Cut down my coffee consumption to 1 cup per day

Home Management Goals:

6. Unpack 5 boxes from the garage

7. Organize master bedroom closet

Business Goals:

8. Post one blog post each day and start my regular posting schedule!

9. Redesign/update my design business website. I’ve been wanting to do this for a while now.

10. Use google docs to create new design questionnaires.

What are your goals for the week?

Losing the Baby Fat Weight Loss Update

losingthebabyfat

Its been way too long since I last updated my weight loss progress  (3 weeks, I think), but I’ve lost another 2.5 pounds! My current weight is 205 lbs.

We are still juicing and finding new, yummy ways to create delicious, healthy juices. The kids are drinking more juice, too, and I’ve started adding more carrot into their apple juice to ease them into the vegetable juices.

I mentioned in my goals post that we are transitioning our family’s diet into a whole foods plant-based diet that’ll include very little meat and only a small amount of dairy (mostly butter). We’ve made the switch to rice milk and almond milk for cereal, coffee, recipes, etc… That change was pretty easy.

The recipes we’ve tried for meatless chili, pizza (using vegan cheese), and vegetable soup were winners, too.

I’m planning on writing more about our diet changes and sharing recipes on The Sensible Mom in the future. :-)

Here’s how my weight loss progress looks now:

Beginning weight: 220 lbs.

Current Weight: 205 lbs.

Goal Weight: 170 lbs.

# of total pounds I want to lose in 2012: 50lbs.

# of pounds to go until I reach my goal: 35 lbs.

Total # of pounds lost to date: 15 lbs.

Next week, I’ll share an updated picture of how I look.

How’s your weight loss progress going?
