The entire Bible is precious to me, but there are three places that I go to regularly for wisdom on how the Lord would have me to live as a Christian, wife, and mother. Those places are 1 Peter chapter 3, Titus chapter 2, and Proverbs 31 verses 10 through 31. The verses found in these chapters have shaped the way I live my life, and while I fall greatly short of being where I should be as a christian women on a regular basis, these three places are where I find myself going back to over and over again for grace and help and wisdom from the Lord.
I thought we might pick out just one of these places to visit week by week to get a greater understanding of who we are to be as women. Why don’t we begin with Proverbs 31? We could go through one verse at a time week by week. If you are not familiar with where Proverbs 31 is located, it is found in the Old Testament (the first section of the Bible as the Bible is divided into the Old and New Testaments), almost in the center of your Bible, just after the book of Psalms (a rather large book in the Old Testament).
We’ll start with Proverbs 31 verse 10. It states in the NASB version (my favorite version):
An excellent wife, who can find? For her worth is far above jewels.
If this isn’t a thought provoking verse, I don’t know what is! Excellent? Is that possible? It must be or else it wouldn’t be in God’s Word, right?
This verse is stating that being an excellent wife is not impossible, but since she is so rare (who can find her? suggests she is hard to find), her worth is far above jewels (something exceedingly precious to man). To become an excellent wife requires many godly characteristics which the verses following Proverbs 31:10 expound upon. We’ll get into the next verse next Sunday.
For this week, let’s think about the kind of wife our husbands might say we have been. What areas of our life do we need to bring to God in prayer in order to move towards becoming an excellent wife?
