Breakfast is the most important meal of the day, right?
I think it is, and so I rarely ever miss it. I try to make sure all of my children have breakfast everyday, too.
But it isn’t always easy. If you were to ask me what the most stressful time of day is for me, I would answer that it’s morning time. Unquestionably, morning time. It’s in the morning that children need to be changed and bathed. It’s in the morning that I have to put my “referee” hat back on, sometimes before I get out of bed. And it’s in the morning that my baby girl is attached to my hip, meaning that I need to make things happen one-handed.
All of this means that right now, in this season of life with small children, you won’t find me cooking elaborate breakfasts. Pancakes, waffles, and french toast are mostly reserved for dinner in our home.
What breakfast is like in our home
No, breakfast is simple. I want to say that it’s “easy,” but it’s not. Getting through breakfast without feeling a little crazy is an accomplishment at my house. It’s not easy, but it is simple and budget-friendly.
One of the ways I keep breakfast simple, yet satisfying, and easy on our grocery budget is by shopping sales to purchase our favorite breakfast items.
Right now, Dominick’s (a Safeway affiliate grocery store), is having their Buy 4, Save $4 promotion, so we headed there recently to shop for some simple breakfast items.
There was a large selection of breakfast items included in the sale, including an assortment of cereals. We picked up two boxes of one of our family’s favorite breakfast cereals, Honey Nut Cheerios. We also bought coffee, creamer, bananas, and pop tarts. Pop Tarts are rare in our house, but they were a treat to have for breakfast on David’s 4th birthday. We bought the ‘unfrosted’ kind.
I liked that the participating items included in the Buy 4 Get $4 offer available at Dominick’s were clearly marked with a tag as well as in the ad that I picked up right after I entered the store.
Overall, we had a nice trip to Dominick’s. ย We found everything we needed, and if you’d like toย see more about my shopping experience, you can see moreย here in my Google+ storyย (there are lots of pictures!).
Breakfast should be easy, right? At least it needs to be at my house. I know the day will finally come when I have more time to spend making nostalgic breakfasts for my husband and children.
For now? Our everyday breakfasts will be simple and easy on the budget, though not always easy on my mind…or my patience. ๐

My husband usually eats and then has to run out to work. Then the kids and myself listen to the Bible while we eat our usually toast and eggs for breakfast. Today I made some hard boiled eggs for a change. Sometimes my youngest has trouble sitting still so breakfast can be a little crazy at our house too. ๐

Hi Shelly, I can definitely relate. I’m looking forward to later when the kids are a little older and breakfast is easier, and then, I tell myself, I’m have time to make breakfasts from scratch. Right now, I’m thankful for the quick options I have to feed the kids. ๐

Hi Chelsea! It’s not easy, but my husband and oldest daughter help, too. That’s a huge help for me. ๐
