What are your goals for this week?
P.S. If you’re keeping up with up our radon updates, I sent in the test canister and we got the results last week. Basically, the radon level in our basement is just under the “action level” put out by the EPA. The EPA recommends that there be action taken to fix radon levels above 4.0 picoCuries per liter of air. The reading in our basement is 3.6ย picoCuries per liter of air. At that level, it’s recommended that you consider getting things fixed to bring the level down.
For us, because we’re renters, the results mean that our landlord is going to do absolutely nothing. But at least we know the level in our basement now.
To put things in perspective, having a radon level of 3.6ย picoCuries per liter of air is like having nearly 200 chest x-rays per year. ๐

So sorry to hear of the radon! Are there any plans to possibly find a different rental?
Here’s my 10 things to do list::
1) Call or text DS2’s coach to see when he will train DS2 again. It was supposed to be a weekly training session and he was paid a month in advance. So far, no word from coach.
2)Walk 2 miles outside 3x/wk… In the daytime. I know I was walking to/from work but walking in the dark, after work, at 12 am, probably isn’t a smart idea. No matter how safe I think the town is.
3) Make a MD appt for myself. I was supposed to be there in April. My bloodwork may be bad and he may yell, but he is only trying to help. I’m scared.
4) Watch more movies with DS2. He is becoming a movie buff and laughs at my silly comments during them. Plus, he may be wanting my attention, like when he was little and kept asking me to help him with homework, even though he knew the answers.
5) Bake cookies for the family. They like them and are too nice to ask.
6) Get ice cream for everyone. It’s on sale and someone ate DS1’s flavor.
7) Go to bed earlier and get up earlier. It may be key to better blood sugar and so many other things.
8) Get my sister a birthday card. I sent her perfume that she likes and have a gift card to send her. I’m debating on flowers. The last time I sent some, I ordered her favorite type of flower and the florist gave her daisies in a Halloween mug. She hates daisies and her birthday is in August. It got resolved a week later but she was not a happy camper over the whole mess.
9) Figure out a budget. With new bills coming in, I have to see how much the mandatory bills are, how much is left over and how much i can throw towards paying down the mortgage at a faster rate.
10) Attempt to plan a family day. Make sure DH requests the same day off and go play lazer tag and go bowling. Eat pizza and wander around the gaming facility. We rarely do this and it’s time.
It’s been a bit busy lately. I took DS2 to IHOP for 58 cent pancakes. We were both up for it and it cost me a whopping $4.45 for 9 pancakes and a decanter of coffee. I hope to get a college issue resolved and will email the director again…..Hopefully, she will email me back this time! I will call by friday if i don’t get a response.
The house next to us was abandoned for about 3 years. The family just picked up and left and it went into foreclosure. I saw a flower growing at one time in the front yard and ended up digging up the bulb and putting it in my garden. A new couple recently purchased the home and got rid of all of the bushes/flowers and replaced them with rocks. That flower grew 5 beautiful periwinkle blooms this year. I don’t know if i rescued it or stole it. But i admire it.

Hi, Lisa! You’ve got a great list of goals. ๐
Definitely, do not walk home at midnight even if you live in a safe neighborhood. This world has crazies in it.
We’ve been eating ice cream and homemade cookies this summer, too. I made chocolate chip cookies a 2 or 3 times for my family and sugar cookies the other day.
As for moving, yes, we have plans to move as soon as our lease is up.
Shelly says
You did great on your goals this past week, Sandra.
I’m sorry to hear about the radon levels. At least now you know and can make plans to move on to a new rental as soon as you can.
Do you have windows in the basement? It might help if you have windows in the basement, to open one and have a fan blow the air out from the basement and open another window to bring fresh air in. That might help lower the levels while you are living there.
Sandra says
Thanks, Shelly! We have a window in our basement but it doesn’t open all that wide. We’re trying to make sure to air out the house more often, though.

Good work on your goals this week! My husband and I have been planning to write our family mission statement since reading Marina Slayton’s book, but haven’t finished it yet…need to get on that!
We had our house tested for radon while in the process of buying it. I can’t remember what the level was, but it was under the limit where the seller was required to fix it. Two of my neighbors have a radon mitigation system, however, so I’m wondering if we might need to have it done. We do have a big sliding glass door in our basement, and I open it from time to time (especially in good weather) to air things out. I guess your test results give you another good reason to move out when your lease is up ๐
Sandra says
Hi, Erin! Yes, the test results are another reason we’ll be moving as soon as we can. I got my test kit from the Radon Testing Corporation of America (https://www.rtca.com/), and it wasn’t very expensive. You could buy a kit and test in your basement for peace of mind. ๐
