Losing the Baby Fat: Week 3 Update

February 6, 2012 by Sandra 3 Comments

Time for my weekly weight loss update.

I lost 1.5 lbs. last week. πŸ™‚

So here’s where I’m at in terms of my weight loss goal this year…

Current Weight:Β 215.5 lbs.

Goal Weight:Β 170 lbs.

# of total pounds I want to lose in 2012:Β 50lbs.

# of pounds to go until I reach my goal: 45.5Β lbs.

Total # of pounds lost to date: 4.5 lbs. (I’ve actually lost 33 lbs. since I came home from the hospital 7 weeks ago, but I’m only counting the weight I’ve lost since starting this challenge.)

The exciting part is that I’m only 2 lbs. away from my pre-pregnancy weight at just under 8 weeks postpartum! I was 213.5 lbs. when I found out that I was pregnant with Elisabeth, and I’m hoping to get these last 2 pregnancy pounds off in the next two weeks.

I spent a good amount of time on the treadmill last week, and I worked out my arms with the exercise band. We also walked around the zoo for Family Day. We went to Chick-fil-A for their free breakfast entree for our Family Day, so the walk at the zoo helped to burn a lot of those extra calories.

This week, I’m going to continue to focus on getting on the treadmill when I have a chance and working my arms with the exercise band.

How’s your weight loss progress going?

10 Goals for the Week

February 6, 2012 by Sandra 1 Comment

Last week went okay as far as my goals were concerned. I did take some time to pray and ask the Lord for help in seeing what needs to change in my life or be put on hold in order for me to have more productive days and not feel overwhelmed. Here are some things that the Lord has brought to mind…

:: I need to catch up on the reading, lectures, and videos for my two online classes, so after I finish reading my current book, WordPress Web Design for Dummies, I won’t be starting any new books until I’m caught up. I have 5 chapters to finish reading WordPress Web Design for Dummies.

:: I need to set a limit for the amount of time I spend on facebook. I’m not a huge facebook user, but I do enjoy spending around 30-45 minutes a day there scrolling through posts and clicking on articles I want to read or learning about deals I might need on diapers, food, etc… I spend the most time on facebook after the kids go to bed. I open it up and scroll quickly through the day’s posts, stopping and clicking on things I want to read. I follow a lot of blogs on facebook, so the time there scrolling through posts can quickly add up. To combat spending too much time on facebook, I’m going to use The Tiny Timer and limit myself to 25 minutes per day, total.

:: In order to be able to get more done during the day without feeling stressed, I’m going to start having Isaac and David watch one educational video per day for around 30-45 minutes. I’m going to start with the Leap Frog videos, which are amazing and have helped countless homeschooling kids learn the alphabet and letter sounds way faster than mom could teach them.

:: Start using a schedule again. I’m great at making schedules, but not so great at keeping them. I picked up my old schedule and went over it and made changes that I think will help structure our days better. I’m going to keep the schedule on my desk, so it’s always available for me to quickly glance at and see what’s next.

I think that if I’m able to accomplish these things, my days will be less stressful and I won’t feel so behind all the time. I’ll let you know how it goes. πŸ™‚

Now for how I did with last week’s goals…

Family/Mothering Goals:

1. Cook with David, our almost 3yr. old. I’m crossing this off my list, because even though I didn’t actually get this done, it’s not because I didn’t try. David and I were going to make homemade waffles together, and he decided that he didn’t want to help. So, yes, the child that almost always wants to help on everyone else’s cooking day with mom did not want to join me in the kitchen on his day. We’ll try again later this month.

2. Write in the children’s baby books. I had success writing in Elisabeth’s and Breanna’s books. I want to make writing in their books more of a priority, because it’s always fun to go back and read what they were doing at different ages and what their likes were. The kids also love reading their books, and I know they’ll treasure them even more as they get older.

Personal Goals:

3. Walk for 30 minutes 3 days this week and do strength training 2 days with my exercise band. Last week was a pretty good week as far as exercise went. I was on the treadmill quite a bit and used the exercise band at least 2 days.

4. Finish readingΒ WordPress Web Design for DummiesΒ by Lisa Sabin-Wilson. I made progress in this book, but I still have 5 chapters to go until I finish. There are 18 total chapters in this book, and the code-heavy chapters are taking me awhile to get through. Chapters 11 & 12 are particularly code-heavy.

5. Wake up by 8:00am every morning. No, I was not successful in this area. Elisabeth and I still haven’t quite found our groove, and we are still working on bed time and a regularly sleep schedule. Elisabeth will be 8 weeks old on Wednesday.

Home Management Goals:

6. Help the kids clean their closet. Done.

7. Put away my coupons, so that I actually have them ready when I need them. Done.

Business Goals:

8. Post one blog post each day. Not quite, but I definitely made progress. Having my posts planned helped, for sure.

9. Implement regular Office Hours for both my business and blog time, and send emails I didn’t get to last week. I guess I’m going to try the 9:30-11:30pm Office Hours this week. Again, I didn’t quite get this done perfectly, but I made progress. I got caught up on emails for about 1 day, but the Office Hours weren’t that successful. I’m shooting for 9-11pm this week.

10. Add more plugins for functionality to The Sensible Mom. I didn’t get to this at all, but it’ll stay on my list for this week.

And now for this week’s goals…

Family/Mothering Goals:

1. Cook with Nathan.

2. Write in Nathan’s, Isaac’s, and David’s baby books.

Personal Goals:

3. Walk for 30 minutes 3 days this week and do strength training 3 days with my exercise band.

4. Finish readingΒ WordPress Web Design for DummiesΒ by Lisa Sabin-Wilson.

5. Wake up by 6:00am every morning. This sounds impossible right now, but with the changes I made to my written schedule, I’m going to strive for a 6am wake up time.

Home Management Goals:

6. Organize the bathroom shelves.

7. Clean the kitchen floor.

Business Goals:

8. Post one blog post each day.

9. Implement regular Office Hours for both my business and blog time and start new client project.

10. Add more plugins for functionality to The Sensible Mom.

What are your goals for the week?

Super Savings Saturday: CVS

February 4, 2012 by Sandra 4 Comments

After not stepping a foot into CVS in about 2 months, I could not pass up their diapers deal this past week, especially since I had around $28 in expired Extra Care Bucks to use (My local CVS accepts expired Extra Care Bucks).

I was also happy to get two tubes of fluoride-free Tom’s of Maine toothpaste for only $0.99 each after Extra Care Bucks! This is my family’s favorite toothpaste, and it’s rather expensive at $3.99+ without a sale or coupons. I have to be careful when I buy this toothpaste, though. Not all Tom’s of Maine is fluoride-free, so I always have to make sure to read the labeling to make sure I’m buying the fluoride-free variety.

$0.87 Cadbury Caramel Egg (Three of the kids shared this egg. I’m not a fan of these gooey eggs, but I gave in and let the kids try it. I did put it in the fridge for a while so that the caramel inside wouldn’t be so gooey when they bit into it.)
-$0.87 Extra Care Bucks when you buy one
=FREE after ECBsΒ

$3.99 Tom’s of Maine fluoride-free toothpaste
-$3.00 Extra Care Bucks when you buy one (There was a purchase limit of 2, so I bought 2.)
=$0.99 after ECBs

Diaper Deal:

$27.96 for (4) packs of Luvs diapers
$3.00 for (1) pack of Pampers Baby Wipes
-$0.50 manufacturer’s coupon for the Pamper’s Wipes
-$10.00 Extra Care Bucks for spending $30 on these baby products
=$20.46 after ECBs

As I mentioned, I had around $28 in ECBs to use when I walked in the store, so after everything was rung up, I paid $14.38 out of pocket (with tax). I got back $18.37 in Extra Care Bucks for next time!

The ECBs I received back were as follows…

$0.50 for my Fall spending ECBs

$1.00 for using a reusable bag with a CVS Bag Tag, which was scanned at the register

$6.00 for the 2 tubes of Tom’s of Maine toothpaste

$0.87 for the Cadbury Caramel egg

$10.00 for the diaper deal since I spent over $30 on baby items

All these ECBs totaled $18.37. πŸ™‚

Did you get any great deals this week? I’d love to hear about it!Β

11 Do-It-Yourself Projects to try this year

February 2, 2012 by Sandra 6 Comments

It’s about to get interesting. This year I’m hoping to roll up my sleeves and try making some of the products we use everyday from scratch. The reason isn’t so much to save money here, because it’s pretty easy to get your regular, everyday health/hygiene/household products for cheap when you use coupons paired with a sale.

No, I’m going to do this for my family’s health. Many of the products we use to clean our homes and our bodies are full of chemicals and other compounds linked to cancer. Yikes!

Since we discovered this information over a year ago, we’ve slowly been doing away with the old familiar products we’ve used in our home and on our bodies and started replacing them with safer, more natural, and organic items instead. For instance…

We replaced our face and body lotions with organic body lotions and more recently, coconut oil.

We now use fluoride-free toothpaste.

We use eco-friendly chap-stick.

I use paraban-free shaving cream.

After my beloved “hair lotion” ran out to keep my “fly-away” hairs down (and shiny), I started using coconut oil on my hair instead.

We use paraban-free body wash.

We use aluminum-free deodorant.

These are just some of the things we’ve done to improve our health in the long run. And the products we are using have been great, mostly. It’s been tough to find a good aluminum-free deodorant, and we had one fluoride-free toothpaste that no one in our family cared for except me. Then there are products that we have yet to replace or haven’t found an adequate replacement for. Those are the products I mainly want to focus on making for my DIY Projects this year.

So, here’s my 2012 list of projects shown in the months I want to complete them in….

February: Liquid Hand Soap

March: Face Wash (love that this face wash removes makeup, too)

April: Deodorant

May: Baby Wipes

June: Hair Detangler

July: Diaper Cream

August: All-Purpose Cleaner

September: Mouthwash

October: Coffee Creamer (using organic ingredients)

November: To be determined….I’m leaving this open because I know I’ll read a blog post on some amazing homemade product that I’ll want to try. When I do, I can add it here.

December: Cinnamon Rolls (throwing this one in for fun and the holidays πŸ™‚ I’ll be trying out a recipe from The America’s Test Kitchen Family Cookbook using as many organic ingredients as possible.)

I’m hoping lots of these projects turn out to be major successes.

Are you planning on making things more homemade this year? Are there any recipes you can recommend?
