Disney’s FROZEN: Printable Activities and Games for Kids

August 15, 2019 by Rachel 6 Comments

frozen1383703526Today I am bringing you great FROZEN printable activities and games for you and your kids.

I have loved Disney animated movies since I was 5. That year I came down with pneumonia and missed my last weeks of kindergarten. As a consolation for missing my graduation, my mom and dad bought me The Little Mermaid on VHS. The moment they handed it to me, and the excitement I felt holding it in my hands, is still etched in my memory.

There were times in my 20’s when I felt that that time was Disney’s “Golden Age” of animation and musical scores. During that time, Disney produced Aladdin, Beauty and the Beast, The Lion King, Mulan, Pocahontas, and more.

Thankfully, I was wrong in my assumption.

In 2011, Disney produced Tangled, and I fell in love with Disney animation and music again. Now, the creator’s of Tangled are bringing us another classic animation, FROZEN. I have been singing the soundtrack around the house as I listen to my Disney Pandora radio station…and I haven’t even seen the movie, yet!

My daughter is now at the age where she can sit and watch movies like this with me, and she can also participate in some of the FROZEN activities that Disney has produced for families to enjoy together!

Breastfeeding 101: Tandem Nursing

April 15, 2014 by Rachel 2 Comments

Breastfeeding 101: Tips and Tools to help you Succeed! #breastfeed #nursing
Written by my contributing writer, Rachel

When we learned we were pregnant with our second child, my daughter had just turned 1 year old and was still nursing strong. She showed absolutely no signs of letting up on nursing. At my La Leche League (LLL) meetings, I had heard about tandem nursing and that women could breastfeed two children (and sometimes more!) at the same time, but I didn’t know if that would work for me.

I could not imagine nursing a toddler and needy newborn at the same time. I would NEVER get anything done. Β Nursing TWO children would be a lot of work, time-consuming, and a bit of a juggling act. However, I was not ready to end my nursing relationship with my daughter.

tandemlogo

I decided to talk with other tandem nursing moms through my Facebook LLL group, and I read several LLL articles on the subject. I also bought Adventures In Tandem Nursing by Hilary Flower – such a great resource!

adven_in_tandem_nursinge_lg

Just like deciding whether or not to nurse is YOUR decision and no one else’s, so is deciding to tandem nurse.

Here are the reasons I decided to tandem nurse:

1. I Wasn’t Ready to Stop
My daughter and I were not ready to end our nursing relationship. She has been an on demand nursling since birth. Even now at 26 months, she would nurse all day long, if I let her! I try to limit her to one morning, one noon, and one night nursing session with a few times in between if she is in need of some calming mommy time. It is amazing how nursing can change her attitude – a lifesaver for those terrible two tantrum moments!

2. Continued Health Benefits
I wanted to give my daughter the health benefits of extended nursing to two years. In mainstream media, the idea of nursing past the 1 year mark seems absurd. However, the World Health Organization recommends nursing to 2, if desirable for both you and your nursling. Your toddler is still receiving wonderful health and emotional benefits by doing so – and so are you!

3. Sibling Bonding
This has been one of the most amazing benefits of tandem nursing for me. Getting to witness the bond develop between my daughter and newborn son is beautiful. They gaze lovingly and inquisitively at each other while nursing, she helps him out by squeezing my breast and expressing more milk for him, and she strokes his hair while they both nurse. These are precious moments that I will hold dear for a long time.

Ben and Meah bonding

Though it can be time-consuming and demanding, I find that tandem nursing has been worth the effort and has been a good decision for myself and my little ones.

I’d love to hear your nursing stories! Maybe you are currently pregnant and considering tandem nursing now, or have tandem nursed before. What effect has tandem nursing had on you?

Breastfeeding 101: 7 Benefits of Breastfeeding

February 7, 2014 by Rachel 11 Comments

Breastfeeding 101: Tips and Tools to help you Succeed! #breastfeed #nursing

Written by my contributing writer, Rachel

Most nights (and days) were exhausting in the early months of breastfeeding my daughter. On those days when I really wanted to throw my hands up in defeat, it helped to remind myself of the benefits of breastfeeding.

In no particular order, here are 7 benefits of breastfeeding that I found most encouraging and many times impressive.

1. Just what baby needs. As long as your baby is gaining weight and has normal diapers, you can rest assured that they are getting exactly what they need from you. Keep feeding yourself well, and drink, drink, drink your water! If you don’t do these things, the only person who will be left wanting will be you.

2. Keeps sickness at bay. Breast milk is a wonder liquid. In a lot of cases it can prevent your child from getting sick. Your body’s own immunities pass through your milk to your little one. Recently my husband and I had a terrible 24 hour stomach bug. Thankfully, neither of my children got it! (I am tandem nursing. A new thing for me that I may write about it in an upcoming post.)

3. Helps mommy! Sometimes we suffer from supermom syndrome, which has us running all around the place, trying to care for our new little one, take care of ourselves and our home. Nursing forces you to sit down. When your baby is nursing, your body releases the hormone oxytocin. During labor, this progressed your contractions. When nursing, the release of this hormone will relax you.

4. Get more acquainted. That same hormone that relaxes you (oxytocin) will also aid in the bonding process between you and your new baby. Those first few months of welcoming a baby into the family has its challenges. Making time to simply focus on your baby may be one of those challenges. I have found this to be especially true with my second child. I am having to balance my time with a toddler, newborn, housework, myself, and most importantly my husband. Nursing is the most one-on-one time I get with my little baby boy.

BenjaminMy precious baby boy <3

5. Free! One way I contribute to the budget of our one income family is by breastfeeding! It does not cost anything but my time. Women’s Health states that women who breastfeed exclusively can save between $1,200 – $1,500 on formula!

6. Insta-soother. It is incredible how babies find comfort when at their mama’s bosom. They can sense your calmness, or lack thereof, when nursing. My daughter was 5 months old when our car was rear ended at a stop light. Praise God that neither one of us were injured, but she was pretty startled. A kind couple let us sit in their car and nurse while we waited for my husband to arrive. My daughter’s beautiful eyes searched my face as she nursed and instantly stopped crying. She knew she was safe. Even now during her toddler meltdowns I can nurse her and it changes her mood instantly.

7. Easy. I have not had to deal with preparing or cleaning bottles in order to feed my children. Β I simply find a place to sit and they begin eating right then and there.

For more great breastfeeding information, visit the World Health Organization’s website.

What are the reasons you breastfeed/breastfed or are considering to do so?

Breastfeeding 101: 7 Tips for Preparing to Breastfeed Your Baby

September 23, 2013 by Rachel 5 Comments

breastfeeding

Note from Sandra: I’ve long wanted to talk about the subject of breastfeeding here on The Sensible Mom. I’ve experienced lots of bumps in the road when it came to nursing my own children, and I’ve learned so much along the way. I want to share what I’ve learned with you, but time isn’t on my side right now. πŸ˜‰ So, my awesome assistant Rachel is going to be writing these posts and sharing from her own personal experience. I’m hoping to join in and write posts on this subject at a later time.

I hope you’re able to glean helpful tips as we share.

Preparing to Breastfeed Your Baby
Before I had my first child I thought breastfeeding was a natural way to feed my baby, and I would instinctively know how to do it when the time came. However, once my daughter arrived, I was pretty clueless as to how to feed her. The first few days were a blur of learning different nursing positions, how to be confident that I was providing enough milk for my baby girl, and what modern day nursing accessories would be beneficial.

If I had it to do over, I would have liked to have been better prepared. So, today I am sharing with you my 7 tips for preparing to breastfeed your baby!

1. First, No Pressure. You do not have to breastfeed to be a good mom. If you are unsure if you want to breastfeed or use formula, do your research on both. I chose to breastfeed because of the health benefits for my baby and the fact that it fit better into our budget!

2. Find a Lactation Consultant. The first few days and weeks after your baby’s birth are critical to your breastfeeding success. Talk to an IBCLC (International Board Certified Lactation Consultant) for helpful tips and to establish a relationship with them prior to baby’s arrival. You may be calling them often in the beginning of your breastfeeding journey! To begin your search, go to this Find A Lactation Consultant Directory.

3. Join a Local La Leche League (LLL) Group. There is a wealth of breastfeeding knowledge to be found in a LLL group. Many LLL group leaders are IBCLC certified. Also, the nursing mothers you come in contact with at these meetings will provide you with a great community of breastfeeding support. I recommend attending a meeting even while you’re still pregnant. Locate your closest LLL group here.

4. Attend a Breastfeeding Class. Take a course on the subject of breastfeeding to get an overview of what you might expect. Learning about a good latch, different nursing positions for you and your baby, and how to tell if your baby is β€œgetting enough” – are all very common concerns for first time nursing moms. There are a variety of places to look for a class, but I would start with contacting your local hospital, birth center or LLL group.

5. Nursing Bras and Nursing Pads. Nursing bras create easy access to the β€œgoods”, while the pads help keep you dry. In between feedings you will be leaking excess milk while your body evens out your milk production.

6. Burp Rags. These are helpful not only for catching your baby’s spit up but also for wiping up the drips you get when changing nursing positions.

7. Breast Cream. After the birth of my daughter, my midwife gave me a sample of breast cream. I didn’t think much of the gesture at the time. How painful could this possibly be? It didn’t take long for me to send my husband out to the store to buy more. My favorite creams were Lansinoh, Mother Love and Coconut Oil (found with the cooking oils in your grocery store).

There you have it! The preparations I wished I had taken before I started breastfeeding. What are some of the concerns you might have about preparing to breastfeed?
