Super Savings Saturday

I made a few shopping trips this week, and I’m excited to share them with you especially because I was able to use a lots of coupons at Whole Foods!

First up is Jewel.

I spent $40.47 after coupons and sales for everything pictured.  Here’s the rundown:

$1.45 each for Organic tortilla chips (these are on sale for BOGO free, buy one at $2.89 and get the second one free – I bought a total of six bags. I decided to stock up because I normally pay $1.99 for these on sale.)

$4.00 for 12 pack of Marcal Toilet Paper (reg. price $7.99, on sale for $5.00 and I used a $1.00 manufacturer coupon)

$1.88 for 18oz. box of Corn Flakes

$5.49 for Organic Milk (this milk is regularly $6.49, but I had a coupon to save $1 on milk when you buy Kelloggs Cereal)

$3.49 for grinder of Natural Sea Salt (reg. price $5.49)

$3.49 for grinder of Organic Italian herbs (reg. price $5.49)

$3.49 for grinder of Organic 4 color Peppercorn (reg. price $5.99)

$2.49 each for Organic Bath Co. Honey Chai body butter (75% off! And this stuff smells sooo good! **Mental Note** Look for organic health/beauty products at places people don’t normally buy them at, like the grocery store. You might find a great deal!)

$2.49 each for Organic Bath Co. Body Polish (basically a really lovely body wash/scrub and again 75% off!)

One final note on Jewel, I was VERY impressed with their selection of organic foods.  Wow! I took one day recently while I was shopping without kids to really take my time and explore Jewel and find out what kind of organic foods they had offer. I left the store feeling really impressed with their selection and knew I would shop there more often.

Whole Foods was really taken a toll on the food finances, and I was starting to get a little weary of it, especially since it’s out of the way for us. I also like the way that Jewel has their organic selection dispersed throughout the store in a way that makes sense.  Meijer, another grocery store I shop at on occassion, needs to take a lesson. I won’t stop shopping at Whole Foods, though, because their selection of produce is a lot fresher and wider in variety plus they carry a lot of the “weird” products you can’t find at Jewel, but I am going to cut down my trips to Whole Foods to only twice a month.

Onto the next store! I made two trips to Whole Foods this week (not ordinary ;-)). One trip was for regular grocery shopping on Monday, and then we happened to be in the area again on Thursday for David’s 2yr. check up with the doctor so we decided to make another quick trip for close to free napkins and a few other things.

I spent $1.06 for 2 packs of Seventh Generation Napkins (only 1 is pictured) and 3 Glen Muir Organic Pizza sauces! Here’s what I did:

The above is just the quick trip we made after the doctor’s appointment.  Below is what I picked up during my bigger trip on Monday:

In all, I paid $41 after coupons and sales for everything pictured.  Here’s the breakdown:

$21.11 for the two packs of grass-fed beef (about 4 pounds of meat @ $4.99/lb. – good this we only cook meat about once a week!)

$3.31 for Organic Golden Delicious apples (about 2 lbs. @ $1.69/lb.)

$3.25 for oranges (not organic – $0.99/lb.)

$6.61 for Organic bananas ($0.99/lb.)

$2.99 for SO Delicious Coconut Milk
-$1.00 Printable Coupon
-$1.00  Whole Foods coupon found in their store flyer

Overall, I was really happy with the savings this week, and I can’t wait to get better and better at saving money while still eating healthy and buying organically. I’m excited, too, because a friend told me that a store called Trader Joe’s has lots of organic food for a fraction of the cost that Whole Foods sells it for. I’ve never been to a Trader Joe’s store before, but the next time I make a Whole Foods trip, I’m going to stop there too since they’re in the same vicinity.

I stopped by Target this week and picked up some nice clearance items.  The blue bowl, gerber sippy cups, and nursing cover were all 75% off.

Here’s the rundown of what I paid for each item:

Saucer plate (very nice and sturdy) $1.18

Nursing Cover $4.14 (I really debated whether I should get this or not because I’m not currently pregnant, but we don’t know whether or not the Lord will bless us with another child and if He does….there’s a slim chance of finding a nursing cover so cheap.  I paid around $8.00 for the one I used with David, and it wasn’t as nice as this one and definitely lower quality. I’m just going to hang on to it for now, but I may give it away, too.)

Kashi Go Lean Crisp cereal (I just remembered that I actually got this at Jewel) $0.29 after $3.00 Vocalpoint coupon that I got in the mail

All totaled, I paid $7.99 plus tax for everything pictured.  I saved around $0.40 for using my Target card to pay for my purchase there since they take off an extra 5% whenever you use it.  I do pay that card off at the end of each month and only use it for the discount.

Someone was thrilled with their new sippy cups…

We also made more than one trip to Walgreens this week.  We’ve decided to switch to fluoride-free toothpaste after learning about how bad fluoride actually is for our bodies, so, I was excited to see that the Tom’s of Maine was only $0.99 after Register Reward this week!  I ended up having to go to a few different Walgreens that weren’t by us because someone really hits our local store when there are good Register Reward deals.  The shelves are often cleared. 🙁 My favorite cashier told me that one day a woman came in and bought 93 body washes that were on Register Reward that week.  No wonder there were none left when I got there.

Anyway, here’s what we did get:

Breathe Right strips were free with free product coupons that had printed out a few weeks ago.

Sandwich bags $0.99 w/in-ad coupon

Gillette Razor $0.99 after $4.00 manufacturer’s coupons and $5.00 Register Reward

Poise pads were $3.89, but I got them for free with a $4.00 manufacturer’s coupon good only at Walgreens that printed a while back

Tom’s of Maine Deodorant $0.99 after $3.00 Register Reward

Centrum Multivitamins $0.99 after $1.00 manufacturer’s coupon (these were on clearance for $1.99)

Family Calendar $2.50 (this was supposed to be $1.00, but it rang up wrong and I didn’t check until after I had left the store)

All totaled, I paid $6.64 out of pocket for everything pictured because I used a few Register Rewards that I already had.  I got back $11.00 in Register Rewards to use on future purchases.

While we were out another day, we stopped at a few different Walgreens stores that were on the way to where we were going.  We picked up fluoride-free toothpaste, more aluminum-free deodorant, (We made the switch to aluminum-free deodorant months ago.  Aluminum in your deodorant isn’t good for you.) mouthwash, and the free after Register Reward ThermaCare heat patches.  I only got one of the children’s toothpaste because after I bought it, I realized that it has fluoride.

All the Tom’s of Maine were $0.99 after Register Reward and the ThermaCare was Free after Register Reward.

I made it to Walgreens this week and picked up some baby wipes, diapers, and eos chapstick.  I was charged wrong for the baby wipes so my out of pocket total was a little more than it should have been.  The specific wipes I picked up were supposed to be $2.00, but ended up ringing up at $2.49, and I bought two packs.  Oh well.

Here’s the breakdown:

$12.00 for two packs of Walgreens brand diapers
$4.98 for two packs of Walgreens brand baby wipes
$2.99 for eos chapsticks (my favorite!)
– (2) $9.00 Register Rewards I had from last week’s deals
=$1.97 out of pocket plus tax

I did get back a $2.00 Register Reward for the eos chapstick (it’s $2.99, get back a $2.00 Register Reward for buying it), and I also got a $3.00 Register Reward for spending $15 on Walgreens brand products (the diapers and wipes).  Overall, because I used the Register Rewards I had from last week’s deals, I saved a significant amount of money.  The bad news is that I used $18 worth of Register Rewards, and I only got back $5 worth.

On a side note, I simply can not wait until I no longer have to buy diapers. David is almost two, and I’m hoping he’ll be potty trained by 2.5 years old. I don’t like to draw out potty training, if necessary.  With Isaac, I let him know that we were going to start potty training and explained what he needed to do.  We put underwear on him, and he had many accidents the first few days (we kept re-enforcing that he needed to tell us when he needed to go), and then he realized that in order for the accidents to stop, he would actually have to tell us when he needed to go potty.  He was potty trained in about a week this way.

I went to Walgreens this week to pick up some of the Register Reward deals and cheap Huggies diapers.  I’m hoping to make it there again today to pick up some more diapers (I can’t wait for the day when we no longer need these!  I’m looking to at least 1 to 1.5 more years. 🙁 ), vitamins, and the children’s homeopathic medicine.  For now, here are the deals I grabbed in my pic.

-$5/2 mfgr. cpn. from 1/2 Red Plum (I was a little bummed that this coupon didn’t scan right.  Instead of taking off $5, it only took off $3.19 –the price of one eyeliner–I’m guessing that it was programmed to scan that way because the clearance price of each one was under $5?  Oh well, I’ll take it.  I’m not a big eyeliner girl, but these make great gifts.)
= $0.69 each (I ended up paying $1.60 each because of the coupon not taking off the correct amount.  Still a great deal, though.  Oh, and because I bought 4, I did use two $5/2 coupons which both scanned incorrectly.  You win some, you lose some.)

I was bummed not to be able to find even one single pack of the free after Register Rewards Finish dishwasher detergent.  I checked at THREE different Walgreens!  I even went on Sunday, and all the shelves were completely empty.  Someone got up early!  Oh well…
