10 Goals for the Week

January 17, 2012 by Sandra 3 Comments

Last week was a pretty good week. We hardly left the house, so that allowed me to be intentional about tackling some of the goals that I had set.

Here’s how I did…

Family/Mothering Goals:

1. Come up with a family activity for us to do for our Family Day on Friday. We ended up ordering cheese pizza with a 50% off coupon I had in my Entertainment Coupon Book. Then we had homemade white chocolate chip cookies and watched Kung Fu Panda part 2, which Ruben had picked up from Redbox.

2. Cook with Nathan for our “cooking day” together. This actually ended up getting done on Monday, but we made sugar cookies.

Personal Goals:

3. Walk for 30 minutes 4 days this week for exercise. Almost accomplished. I ended up walking on the treadmill 3 days.

4. Read Chapters 5-9 inΒ WordPress Web Design for DummiesΒ by Lisa Sabin-Wilson. I finished this up on Monday night, and I’m learning so many tips and helpful resources from this book.

5. Wake up by 7:30am every morning. Thanks to my baby girl and her early morning wake up routine, this goal was easier than I thought it would be.

Home Management Goals:

6. De-clutter Kitchen. Done.

7. Sew hole in Breanna’s pants. Shucks….didn’t get to this one.

Business Goals:

8. Write 1 Blog Post per day. And I obviously didn’t get this done every day as I had hoped. πŸ˜‰

9. Start client website. Done, and it’s coming along great. I can’t wait to show you guys when I’m finished!

10. Make graphic for new 2012 Weight Loss Journey (more on this later). Done. Before pics are coming soon.

Onto this week’s goals…

Family/Mothering Goals:

1. Come up with a family activity for us to do for our Family Day on Friday.

2. Cook with Breanna for our “cooking day” together.

Personal Goals:

3. Walk for 30 minutes 4 days this week for exercise.

4. Read Chapters 10-13 inΒ WordPress Web Design for DummiesΒ by Lisa Sabin-Wilson.

5. Wake up by 7:30am every morning. I’m slowly going to work my way down to waking up by 5:30am each morning over the next few weeks.

Home Management Goals:

6. De-clutter the kids’ desk. Their desk is a clutter-magnet.

7. Sew hole in Breanna’s pants since I didn’t get to this last week.

Business Goals:

8. Write 1 Blog Post per day starting on Tuesday. πŸ™‚

9. Send emails to those on my to-do list.

10. Create graphic I have in mind to use in future weekly posts.

Β Have you set goals for the week? I’d love to hear about them!

Losing the Baby Fat Challenge

January 13, 2012 by Sandra 8 Comments

Now that I’m 4 weeks postpartum, I’m ready to start back in to losing weight. Many of you may remember that I had a goal to lose 50 lbs. in 2011. I started well…and I was on track to make my goal of losing all 50 pounds, but then something wonderful happened.

I found out that I was pregnant.

And all weight loss ceased the very moment I saw that positive pregnancy test. Or at least it seemed that way. But seriously, I didn’t lose another pound. I actually seemed to have instantly gained 4 pounds. Or so it seemed, because of all the bloating I experienced early in the pregnancy.

Fast forward to 9 months later. I have a beautiful, healthy newborn daughter, and it’s time to get back to losing those 50 lbs.

Here are some of my “weight stats” to give you an idea of where my weight has been the last 9 months, and to show you where I’m at today.

Official pre-pregnancy weight in April 2011: 213.5 lbs.

Total amount of weight gained during my 9 month pregnancy: 31 lbs.

Official delivery weight: 244.5 lbs.

My weight the day I left the hospital after the c-section: 248.5 lbs. (Yes, you read that correctly. My weight went up after delivery. Hard to believe considering I HAD a baby, but I’m pretty sure I actually gained the 4 extra pounds due to the massive amount of swelling in my legs and abdomen after the baby was born.)

Current weight 4 weeks & 1 day postpartum: 220 lbs.Β

I’ve lost a total of 28.5 lbs. since I came home from the hospital. And I’m currently 6.5 lbs. from my pre-pregnancy weight.

While I’m happy with my weight loss in the last 4 weeks, I know it’s very common to drop 20-30 lbs. after you’ve given birth and then STOP losing weight. I’m pretty much at that point now. I’ve lost most of the pregnancy weight, and now I have to work hard to get the rest of the weight off and get to my goal of losing 50 lbs. this year.

Oh, and the 50 lbs. I want to lose does not include the pregnancy weight I’ve lost up until this point.

This means that being 220 lbs. right now, to lose 50 lbs. would mean I need to end the year weighing 170 lbs.

I think it’s a doable goal, and I’ll be blogging my progress each week for accountability.

I’m calling this the “Losing the Baby Fat” challenge because I will literally be losing the weight I put on from my very first pregnancy – 11 years ago.

To show you what I mean, just take a look at my “weight stats” for the past 11 years.

In 1997, I met the person that would be my husband and weighed: 125 lbs.

We started dating in 1998, and I still weighed: 125 lbs.

I became pregnant with our firstborn child in 1999 and weighed: 155 lbs.

Yes, I had gained 30 lbs. while dating my husband and before I got pregnant. Looking back, I know it was because of all the eating out we did.

Fast forward to the day I gave birth to our firstborn, I weighed: 252 lbs.

Yes, I gained almost 100 lbs. while pregnant. Seriously. I was going to school and working part-time, and fast food was very convenient. I distinctly remember getting off of work one day and going through the Burger King drive-thru, because I had to get to school. I didn’t have time to go home and make a meal, and, of course, I hadn’t packed a lunch. No, instead I went through the BK drive-thru, and I must have had a coupon or something, because I ended up getting 2 chicken sandwiches (Buy One Get One Free). I ate them both. I remember. Don’t do this, friends. Learn from my mistakes.

All this to say, I really am “Losing the Baby Fat”.

Do you want to join me? I’m going to be updating my weight loss progress every Tuesday. First up, next Tuesday, will be my “Before” pictures.

I can’t wait! πŸ™‚

What about you? Do you have any weight loss goals this year? Let’s encourage each other!

Birth Story: Part 1

January 10, 2012 by Sandra Leave a Comment

Elisabeth will be one month old this week, so before the memories start to get foggy, I’m writing baby girl’s birth story. I’m going to post it in two parts because of its length.

As many of you know, this was my fifth c-section. It was scheduled for Friday, December 16th, but for the first time ever, I went into labor on my own.

It was Tuesday, December 13th. We’d had a normal day. I’d had my last non-stress test done that afternoon, and I saw my doctor for the last time before she was scheduled to deliver the baby.

Later that day, I left the house around 6:00pm to drive to the community college to take my final exam for Spanish class. I took the final exam, and as I left my instructor wished me “suerte” with my “bebe” (luck with my baby). I then made my way down the stairs of the campus for the last time, got in my car, and headed for home.

The final exam had only taken me about 30 minutes to complete so I got home much earlier than usual. The kids were happy to see me home so early. We spent time together, and then they were off to bed around 9pm. That’s about the time I started to feel dull back pain and light but steady contractions. Could it be labor?

I wasn’t sure, so Ruben and I stayed awake for awhile to see if the contractions would subside. They didn’t. Whether I was sitting, standing, or walking, the contractions persisted….albeit not intensely.

Finally, I think it was around 11pm when I began to feel tired and so we headed for bed.

I woke up around 3:00am and realized that I was still having contractions. Needless to say, I never ended up going back to sleep after that. How can you sleep when you think you could be in labor?

I think I laid in bed for about an hour before I finally got up. I surfed the web, walked on the treadmill, sat for awhile on the couch, and got myself ready for the day.

The contractions were still there….uncomfortable, not terribly painful, but steady.

At around 6:00am I decided that I’d call the After Hours phone number for my doctor. I spoke with someone on the phone and explained that I was having contractions since the night before. She told me that my doctor could be contacted at 7:00am, but in the meantime that I should head to the hospital.

And so, I let Ruben know what was up, and we started getting the kids ready to go to the hospital. We were not quite sure what was going to happen once we got there so we didn’t call anyone in our extended family to let them know. In the back of my mind, I was thinking I would go and eventually be sent home to return for my scheduled c-section on Friday.

It didn’t happen that way. We arrived at the hospital, and I was promptly put in a wheelchair and we all made the long walk through the hospital to Labor & Delivery. After checking in at Labor & Delivery, I was put in a room and hooked up to the regular monitors to check baby’s heartbeat and my contractions. Shortly after that, a friendly nurse came into the room and did “the check” to see if I was dilated. I was dilated 1 centimeter.

The doctor was notified, and after that things happened rather quickly. The doctor and more nurses came into the room and let us know we were having a baby….very soon! They were going to go ahead and perform the c-section asap (not because the baby seemed in any danger, but rather so they wouldn’t get behind schedule).

Ruben and I made a few quick calls to find out who was available to watch the kids in the next 15-20 minutes. Ruben reached his parents, and they agreed to quickly get to our house where Ruben would meet them to drop off the kids. One of the nurses in the room gave him exactly 30 minutes to get back to the hospital, so I said my good-byes to the kids and they left.

After that, I went through all the usual motions that come with a c-section. I went over medical information with nurses, talked to the anesthesiologist, was given an IV, and wheeled to the operating room.

There I was prepped for surgery. I’ll spare you the details, but by that time Ruben was back from dropping off the kids and once the show got on the road, he was allowed to join me.

My original OB doctor wasn’t there to perform the c-section, so that was a bit disappointing since she delivered all four of our other children, but another great doctor whom I had visited with before in the office performed the c-section and did a great job.

Everything worked out as it should have because it turns out that when Elisabeth was delivered at 9:17am, the umbilical cord was around her neck and she wasn’t crying and responding how she should have right after delivery. She also started pooping right away. Elisabeth eventually did start really wailing after five or six minutes. πŸ™‚ Good sign! But the doctor from the NICU was there and said she needed to be taken down to the NICU for observation.

To be continued….

I know that in order to accomplish my big goals for 2012, I need to set smaller doable goals on a regular basis to accomplish those larger goals. I use Ann Voskamp’s printable planning sheet for my daily goals, and to go along with that, I’ll be posting 10 goals to tackle each week.

Here’s my list for this week:

1. Come up with a family activity for us to do for our Family Day on Friday.

2. Cook with Nathan for our “cooking day” together.

Personal Goals:

3. Walk for 30 minutes 4 days this week for exercise.

4. Read Chapters 5-9 in WordPress Web Design for Dummies by Lisa Sabin-Wilson.

5. Wake up by 7:30am every morning. I’m slowly going to work my way down to waking up by 5:30am each morning over the next few weeks.

Home Management Goals:

6. De-clutter Kitchen

7. Sew hole in Breanna’s pants

Business Goals:

8. Write 1 Blog Post per day.
