7 Takeaways from the Book: Giving It All Away…And Getting It All Back Again

December 28, 2019 by Sandra 6 Comments

This is a sponsored conversation written by me on behalf of Hobby Lobby. The opinions and text are all mine.

Giving It All Away…And Getting It All Back Again: The Way of Living Generously is the book I finished reading this week.

It’s written by David Green, the founder and CEO of Hobby Lobby. And, to be honest, this book left lasting impressions on me that I won’t soon forget. It also helped spark a few interesting conversations with my husband, Ruben. I like it when books do that in a marriage. 🙂

While it’s hard to narrow down everything I’d like to share from what I read, I’m sure going to try.

So here are My Top 7 Takeaways from the book:

1. Growing up in a true Christian home is a great blessing. I was so encouraged by the stories David Green shared about his family and upbringing. His father was a pastor and his mother was a faithful servant of the Lord and a remarkable woman. His parents never brought home a paycheck for more than $138 in a week. Yet, they were rich (not by worldly standards) but rich in Christ’s blessings. And the legacy they passed on to their six children is amazing.

After reading about their life and having a conversation with Ruben about our own mostly non-Christian upbringings (I’ll spare you the details…), we’re both encouraged by the fact that we’re bringing our kids up in a Christian home. And God promises to bless as a result.

2. God owns Hobby Lobby. The Green family acknowledges this fact and treats Hobby Lobby as God’s business that they are simply stewards over. What a different way of thinking when it comes to such a big company like Hobby Lobby, but I’m sure this pleases the Lord. Knowing that God owns everything including Hobby Lobby has taken the burden off of David Green. Instead, he has the Lord’s peace.

Reading this reminded me that God owns our means of earning a living as well. Our family’s main source of income comes from our YouTube channels. And those channels belong to God. It’s a joy to see how God has used them to bless others while providing a steady monthly income for our family. Thank you, Jesus! 🙂

3. Wealth is more than money. Yes, it can include money, but real wealth isn’t all about finances. True wealth is found in your faith, your family, and the things God has given you to steward while you’re on this earth. Also, this books reminds us not to put our hope in money.

We need to hope in God and remember what the Bible says, “Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moth and rust do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.”

4. Passing the baton to the next generation requires preparation. When a legacy is being transferred from one generation to the next, it requires a lot of work and preparation ahead of time. Otherwise, catastrophe could follow just like in a relay race when one runner drops the baton and doesn’t effectively transfer it to the next runner.

It was inspiring to read how the Green family includes several generations of their family in different aspects of the business of Hobby Lobby. They even have names for each generation. There’s G1, G2, and G3. They’re making sure the baton doesn’t drop when their legacy is passed on from one generation to the next.

5. Our God is able to deliver us. You may or may not know this, but Hobby Lobby was recently part of a landmark Supreme Court case. In September of 2012, they filed suit in a US court against the federal mandate that would’ve forced them to provide and pay for potentially life-terminating drugs and devices. Not complying with the mandate would have resulted in huge fines that could eventually bankrupt Hobby Lobby. So after a family meeting, the Green family decided that their only option was to sue the government.

To make a long story short, their case went all the way to the Supreme Court and they won! During the years their case moved through the court system, there hung a huge sign outside of the executive offices that read, “Our God whom we serve is able to deliver us.” And He did.

6. Make plans but hold them lightly. We can make plans for our lives, but in the end, the Lord directs our steps. I’m pretty sure most of us will know this to be true if we’ve lived on this earth long enough.

7. Hobby Lobby is generous. They give away 50% of their profits to Christian organizations they believe in. Why? Because they know that there are only two things in this world that last — God’s Word and people’s souls. In the book, we’re reminded of the poem by C.T. Studd that reads, “Only one life…’Twill soon be past…Only what’s done for Christ will last.”

Final Thoughts

Those are my takeaways from the book, Giving It All Away…And Getting It All Back Again by David Green. I hope they’re helpful. I recommend picking up a copy of the book and reading it for yourself if you have a chance. By the way, I’m usually a slow reader when it comes to any book outside the Bible, but I was able to finish this book in about seven days. So, if you’re typically a slow reader like I am, I hope that’s an encouragement. 🙂

Have you read any good books lately? I’d love to hear about them.

7 Things I Learned from the Book: 52 Things Kids Need From a Mom

December 17, 2019 by Sandra 4 Comments

7 Things I Learned from the Book: 52 Things Kids Need from a Mom #motherhood

Motherhood is hard work.

But it can also be a beautiful journey — even when there’s pain involved.

In my own journey as a mom, I’ve experienced many, many joy-filled moments. It’s truly a blessing to have five children. There’s laughter and comedy going on in our home all the time.

But…there’s also a lot of pain that’s been written into my personal story as a mother. The most terrifying night of my life happened this past year as I held my then 4-year-old son in the pediatric intensive care unit.

I thought he was dying right in front of me. As the tears filled my eyes, I thought he was dying even as I held him up in my arms struggling to help him in any way that I could while the nurses and doctor did their job to save his life.

By God’s grace, David survived and ultimately underwent a bone marrow transplant. He’s doing well now, but there are bumps along the way. And these little “bumps” that at times steal my joy because of their ability to turn into “mountains” are hard to live with.

But I’m not in control.

God is steering this ship.

I was reminded of that and so many other wonderful things about motherhood and what our kids need from us as moms as I read through the book by Angela Thomas, 52 Things Kids Need from a Mom.

After I finished reading this particular book, I thought it would be a good idea if I shared a post about the tips and ideas that I walked away with and started putting into practice in my own life.

Here’s My Top 7 List:

1. The little things matter. Turning down beds at night. Talking to your kids like they are fascinating. Getting to know their friends and treating their friends like family. Touching your children. It all makes a difference. Seemingly tiny acts of love can speak volumes to those on the receiving end of it. The little things matter.

2. A private family blog is a great idea. Why did I not think of this sooner? Instead of hoping your kids will remember important facts, special events, and even fun stories about your family, why not document it for them in a private a family blog?

Birthdays, where you were born, your family tree, and that vast wealth of knowledge you’ve gained over the years…why not put it all into a blog? A blog that is NOT public. A blog that is only for your family’s eyes to see. When I read about this concept in Angela’s book, I thought: this is genius!

3. You set the tone in your home. It’s true. Our children do not set the tone and frankly, they should not be allowed to set the tone in our homes. They’re kids. They should be following our good example. Yes, as moms and human beings (and sinners!), we will fail at this sometimes, but ultimately, setting the atmosphere in our homes is our responsibility.

4. Share your family’s “highs” and “lows” around the dinner table. This idea wasn’t one of the “52 things” but it’s something that Angela’s family does that really stuck out to me.

Basically, you go around the dinner table, and have each member of your family share one high point and one low point about their day. Our family has started doing this, and we now look forward to hearing each person’s response. You may even be surprised by what you hear.

5. Just keep praying even when you there’s no such thing as “quiet time” in your home. When I only had two kids, it seemed like having quiet time with the Lord was relatively easy. I could read seven chapters a day in my Bible. I had a PRAYER CLOSET that I would visit often. I had it together. 😉

Then I had my third child…and the wheels fell off.

Truthfully, since then, I haven’t been able to get back to the place that I was at with my quiet time as when I only had two children. And that’s perfectly okay. Angela reminded me of this and encouraged us moms to just keep praying around our kids. Praying in the same noisy room that they’re in (just because they want to be with us) is sufficient.

6. It’s okay to do something extra-special for your kids every once in awhile. Plan an over-the-top birthday party for the birthday child, even if it’s just your immediate family that’ll be celebrating with them. Make a homemade Valentine’s Day card. Go on a special outing. The possibilities are endless, but remember, this is only an every-once-in-awhile event.

7. Make much of God, and your kids will notice. In Angela’s words, “Our kids need moms who will teach them that no matter what and no matter where, God is a really big deal.” My greatest joy in life would be to see all of my children come to know Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior, and that they’d each walk with Him.

So that’s it. Those are 7 things I took away from reading the book 52 Things Kids Need from a Mom — a book that was given to me by my mom. 😉

I’d love to hear anything you’d like to share from your motherhood journey!

I'm sharing 3 Mother's Day Gift Ideas for Moms Who Love the Kitchen PLUS How to Make Delicious Strawberry Shortcakes from Scratch #strawberry #shortcake #dessert #howto #mothersday #gifts #ideas

Hi, guys! I hope you enjoy the video, as always, thanks for watching! 🙂

Here’s the Strawberry Shortcakes Recipe:

Print
Strawberry Shortcakes

Ingredients

    For the Fruit Topping:
  • 3 pounds of strawberries, hulled
  • 1/2 cup of sugar
  • 3/4 cup orange juice
  • For the Shortcakes:
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour plus extra for the counter
  • 4 tablespoons sugar
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt (I use fine Himalayan Pink Salt)
  • 8 tablespoons unsalted butter, chilled and cut into chunks
  • 2/3 cup almond milk
  • 1 egg, lightly beaten
  • 1 egg white, lightly beaten
  • For the Whipped Cream:
  • 2 cups heavy whipping cream, chilled
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 2-1/2 teaspoons vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, measure out about 3 cups of strawberries and crush them with a potato masher.
  2. Slice the remaining strawberries and add them to the bowl with the crushed strawberries. Then add the sugar and orange juice, and stir the ingredients together. Once the ingredients are incorporated, place the strawberries in the refrigerator to chill.
  3. For the shortcakes, get the oven ready by adjusting the oven rack to the lower middle position and heat the oven to 425 degrees.
  4. Pulse the flour, 3 tablespoons of the sugar, baking powder, and salt together in either a food processor or a Nurti Ninja with a blend and prep bowl just until they're combined.
  5. Add in the chunks of butter and pulse until the butter has been combined. Then transfer the ingredients to a large bowl.
  6. Mix the almond milk with the whole egg that's been beaten. Then add those ingredients to the flour mixture in the large bowl. Gently stir the ingredients together just until incorporated, then turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface.
  7. Gently knead the dough by folding it onto itself 3 or 4 times. Then shape the dough into a small rectangle that's about 1-inch thick.
  8. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Then using a biscuit cutter (or a circular 1-cup measuring cup), cut out 6 biscuits and place them on the parchment paper about 1-inch apart. You should have enough dough left over to make 2 more biscuits for a total of 8 biscuits.
  9. Once the 8 biscuits are on the baking sheet, brush the tops with the egg white and then sprinkle the remaining 1 tablespoon of sugar over the biscuits. Then place the biscuits in the oven and bake for about 14 minutes or until the shortcakes are golden brown.
  10. Once you remove the shortcakes from the oven, allow them to cool for 10 to 15 minutes while you make the whipped cream.
  11. For the whipped cream, place the heavy whipping cream, sugar, and vanilla extract in a chilled medium-sized bowl, and whip with an electric mixer on low speed for about 3-5 minutes. Whip until soft peaks form. Be very careful not to over-whip.
  12. To assemble the strawberry shortcakes, split a biscuit in half on a plate. Add a heaping spoon of the strawberries to the bottom half, then add a dollop of whipped cream to the strawberries. Place the top biscuit on top of the whipped cream and then add another heaping spoon of the strawberries over the top biscuit and another dollop of whipped cream to that. Repeat this step with the remaining biscuits. Serve and enjoy!

5 Tips for Potty Training Success (and How I’m Potty Training Baby Number 5)

May 9, 2014 by Sandra 4 Comments

This is a compensated campaign in collaboration with Pull-Ups® Training Pants and Latina Bloggers Connect.

5 Tips for Potty Training Success (and How I’m Potty Training Baby Number 5) #SayAdiosToDiapers #Huggies #ad #PottyTraining

Potty training a toddler is no walk in the park.

I believe this is why we moms get to celebrate a holiday known as “Mother’s Day.”

Am I right? 😉

Seriously, though, I should know. I have five kids. And we’re currently working on potty training baby number five, my beautiful and feisty 2-year-old daughter, Elisabeth.

But you know, I think that with the right tips, tools, and mindset, potty training your toddler CAN be a great bonding experience.

It can even be fun to “Say Adios to Diapers!” together.

We’re Using Pull-Ups Training Pants

Because our kids are all different, we have tried varying methods and techniques when it came to potty training each of them. For Elisabeth, we purchased a new potty seat for the commode in addition to Pull-Ups Training Pants.

So far, Elisabeth wants little to do with her new seat, but she adores her Pull-Ups!

She’s decided that she’s done with diapers, but she still needs a little motivation for actually making it to the bathroom to use the potty.

DID YOU KNOW? Pull-Ups Training Pants are proven to deliver more potty training success than diapers. And Pull-Ups have stretchy sides that allow your child to learn the skill of pulling down and up.

5 Tips for Potty Training Success

Even though Elisabeth says she wants to use the potty, and then always says, “Laaaater” whenever I talk to her about actually going, I’m not concerned. I’ve been down this road before with my other kids, and I know that she WILL get the hang of this potty thing.

Since this isn’t a new experience for me, and I’ve learned some things along the way, I thought I’d share my top 5 potty training tips with you.

Here We Go!

Tip #1: Be willing to follow your child’s lead. If your son or daughter seems ready to begin potty training, go for it! Grab the Pull-Ups and get started!

5 Tips for Potty Training Success (and How I’m Potty Training Baby Number 5) #SayAdiosToDiapers #Huggies #ad #PottyTraining

Tip #2: Be careful to involve your child. Take them to the store and pick out a new potty seat or search for one together online. Talk to them about the fun characters and designs that are on the front and back of Pull-Ups Training Pants. Elisabeth loves picking out which design she’s going to wear next.

5 Tips for Potty Training Success (and How I’m Potty Training Baby Number 5) #SayAdiosToDiapers #Huggies #ad #PottyTraining

Tip #3: Be patient…boys generally take longer to potty train than girls. From personal experience and from what’s been shared with me by other moms, I think it’s true that boys take longer to potty train than girls. Your son may also not be ready to start potty training as early as your daughter was.

5 Tips for Potty Training Success (and How I’m Potty Training Baby Number 5) #SayAdiosToDiapers #Huggies #ad #PottyTraining

Tip #4: Be motivating and celebrate your child’s success! Do a happy dance or have a mini-party when there’s potty training success. 🙂

5 Tips for Potty Training Success (and How I’m Potty Training Baby Number 5) #SayAdiosToDiapers #Huggies #ad #PottyTraining

Tip #5: Be prepared to give lots and lots of grace. Just as with anything else, when little ones are learning a new skill, we need to be ready to show grace when mistakes are made. There will be accidents, but how we react to those accidents is what matters most.

5 Tips for Potty Training Success (and How I’m Potty Training Baby Number 5) #SayAdiosToDiapers #Huggies #ad #PottyTraining

Our Final Potty Training Journey has Only Begun

We still have a long way to go before Elisabeth is completely potty trained. But you know what? I’m not in a rush. Maybe it’s because we’ve been down this road before or maybe it’s because she’s our last baby.

However long it takes is fine with me.

5 Tips for Potty Training Success (and How I’m Potty Training Baby Number 5) #SayAdiosToDiapers #Huggies #ad #PottyTraining

Do you have any potty training tips to share? I’d love to hear them! 🙂

We have a super small bedroom because we gave the master bedroom to our 3 boys, and the dresser fit perfectly in the spot next to our bed. It's tall, yes, but not too tall.👍 My old dresser became hubby's because he gave his dresser to my oldest daughter.
